Day Forty-Three

May 31, 2010

Khalil and I did a lot of hiking and I made a controlled deviation from my diet for a while. Way too late to write about it now, but tomorrow there will be pictures. Good night.

Not bad. I’m going to be burning a lot of calories today as I hike with Khalil. Of course I’m going to put some back on with the burgers and Pepsi I plan to eat, but with all the weight I’ve lost in the last few weeks I’m more than happy to indulge in a special occasion with my Little Brother.

Day Forty-Two

I slept in today, did some house-cleaning, and went to northern Westchester with Grace. She had looked online at places to hike near her recording session, and she found Ward Pound Ridge Reservation. It turned out to be a stupendously good choice. We hiked for an hour or so before she had to leave, and then I had another three or four hours to myself before she returned.

I was tired and stiff from yesterday, so it was an effort to keep up a brisk pace. But I kept moving most of that time, and I still only explored a fraction of the trails. There are lots of stream crossings, endless stretches of forest and hills, and many enticing rock outcroppings to climb on.

Near Kimberly Bridge I found some amazing-looking tall old pine trees. I say “amazing” in the context of my love of tree-climbing. It turned out to be one of the best climbing trees I’ve found: I made it right to the top. The pictures show the tree, and the view from it. It was great to switch things up and exercise different muscles for a while. Man, I wish I could climb this beauty every day.

Grace and I picked up Khalil, the boy I mentor, at his home in the Bronx at about 7:30. He’s in our guest bed now, and tomorrow I’m taking him hiking in Ward Pound! Good night.

228.5

May 30, 2010

I’m labeling this as a morning report but actually I didn’t weigh myself until I got back tonight. I don’t like to weigh myself when I’m puffy from sleep and haven’t gone to the bathroom; I feel like I get a more reliable reading after I’ve gotten some exercise.

The problem is that on days like this, when I’m away most of the day, I’m also weighing myself after I’ve eaten and drunk most of the day’s intake. So it’s skewed anyway. Oh well. The point is that I’m following through on my daily weigh-ins.

Day Forty-One

May 29, 2010

I got up with the sun and had a lovely twelve and a half mile hike around the Colonial Greenway. After filling my belly with my ideal brunch, I burned some of it off with a second hike. Then I continued my eat-whatever-I-want day with ice cream, a burger and fries. I rounded out the day with a bottle of Hennepin, my reward for hitting my benchmark of 225 pounds this morning. I surely won’t be at 225 tomorrow, but that’s OK, especially after my astonishing plunge in weight over the last week.

Back to the diet grind tomorrow. Good night!

It’s a celebration

Hennepin. Oh yeah.

Hennepin. Oh yeah.

225 pounds. Down 26 pounds since I started weighing myself every day, and more since before then. I am savoring my reward: a bottle of my old favorite from Belgium by way of Cooperstown.

…and yet another ritual.

After hiking twenty-five miles today I’ve earned this.

Help me celebrate at Blind Tiger!

May 29, 2010

All of you who are in the New York City area, please join me at Blind Tiger on Wednesday June 9 at 6:00 PM to help me celebrate reaching my latest weight benchmark. RSVP by commenting here, or use the Facebook event page. Or heck, why not do it old school and just show up?

Blind Tiger is the exception that proves the rule that I’m not a bar person: somehow I’ve always felt at home there, always have a great time, always make new friends. It’s a beer geek’s paradise, and the food is like nothing I’ve ever had at a bar. If you haven’t been there, then do yourself a favor and allow me to introduce you as I celebrate a joyous occasion.

…and another ritual…

Mmmmm, ice cream at Longford’s! Man that hit the spot: a large waffle cone with Reese’s Nightmare and Moose Tracks.

Establishing a new ritual

Look familiar? It should — this is my third Saturday of hiking the Colonial Greenway, eating essentially this brunch, and hiking the Colonial Greenway again. I love making my own rituals. I sink into them so easily. And this is a particularly healthy one: lots of exercise, a meal that satisfies my deepest gustatory desires, and lots more exercise.

And, after careful consideration, might I also add: OM NOM NOM!!!

Now, back to the trail.
