What I’m not eating in Manhattan

Keep in mind that, for these “The X that I’m not eating” posts, I do *not* just go around taking pictures of every bit of food I see. I only post the food that I’d very much like to eat and, were circumstances different, I would actually stand a good chance of eating. If I weren’t in control, I wouldn’t eat something from all three of the places shown, but I’d bloody well eat something from one or two of them.

So Grace and I were walking along Third Avenue looking for a place where I could get a salad. The first temptation was Hot & Crusty. Wow. Just *look* at the drool coefficient of that window.

Next there was Chirping Chicken, its red and yellow signs proudly illuminating the Manhattan gloom. The rack of grilling chicken in the front window was enticing, but not so much as the pictures of the burger above the counter. God I want that burger.

Last came Starbucks. While waiting for Grace to use the loo, my eyes roamed over the desserts. Mmmmmm… lemon cake. Among other things.

Well, I made it out of that block with my virtue, such as it is, intact. I didn’t buy any of it. Go me!

197.5

197.5

All the hiking and calisthenics and morning walks are paying off. I like the idea of being several pounds under 200 by the time I hit Acadia.

No exercises tonight.

September 23, 2010

I know that there are some of you who worry that I’m going too far. I offer the following to show you that I am erring on the side of caution.

I overdid it on my hike in Ward Pound Ridge Reservation today. My blood pressure clearly bottomed out afterward, because when I was at Whole Foods I got the most intense spells of lightheadedness I’ve had in years. Every time I stood up from a crouch after looking at shampoos, that tingling wave would sweep outward from the center of my head, and I’d have to wait a few seconds for it to pass.

You know how enthusiastic I’ve gotten about my weekly cycle of three consecutive nights of calisthenics followed by four nights off. I wanted very badly to have an unbroken fourth week. Well, I broke my fourth week. The lightheadedness hasn’t been nearly as bad this evening, but my head still feels a bit dodgy. I think it would be unwise to do any more exercises tonight, so I’m not.

The pizza I’m not eating

When I returned to Jacks’ Auto to pick up my car after the oil change, this box of pizza was sitting on the counter. Ooooooh, tempting. Didn’t have any.

Lots of sugary crap that I’m not buying at Stop & Shop

At about 4:00 I dropped my car off for an oil change, walked to a local Verizon store to look at Droid phones, and then stopped at Stop & Shop to see if they had Biscotti. Jackpot! They not only had the Nonni’s “Decadence” biscotti I love so much, but they had a bunch of the Oreo Zone Bars that I’ve been looking for. I got two boxes of the former and five boxes of the latter. I now have enough 100-calorie biscotti to last me through weeks of hunger management, and more than enough Zone Bars to last me through two weeks of hiking in Acadia.

Now for what I didn’t buy. Just look at those cookies and cakes. The cookies and muffins and such at Stop & Shop bakery are better than any grocery store baked goods have a right to be. They are very tempting. And the sheer urban sprawl of bakery table after bakery table presents another level of temptation in itself.

“Whew! I made it past the muffins. Oh! Those cookies look sooooo good… but I’m not going to have any. Phew! They’re behind me. OH NO!! Look at those cakes! Lemon bundt cake and cinnamon rolls and cheese danish ring and… ohhhhh, there’s one of those coffee rolls that reminds me of the ones we used to have when I was a kid…”

Well, I made it past the entire bakery. Then, on the way out of the store, I had to run one final gauntlet: the Halloween candy display. Truthfully, it’s not a challenge. At this point, it simply fills me with disgust. This is our excuse for a tradition? Please.

Long hike in Ward Pound Ridge Reservation

The more I hike in Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, the more I like it. Every time I bushwhack, I find a dramatic new rock outcropping. Today I got lost a few times because I forgot to bring a map with me, but I had some images of the map on my phone that brought me back on track. So my forgetfulness was all to the good, since it resulted in me taking a longer hike in which I explored new trails!

The shots I took of the spider with her teeming offspring, and the black snake, will have to wait until I have time to winnow the hundreds that I took. In the meantime, here are my cell phone shots. Enjoy!

Up and at ’em.

Here was my reaction upon walking by the bog at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation at about 8:25 this morning.

OH MY GOD LOOK AT ALL THE SPIDER WEBS!!!

This was the most spectacular array of glistening, dew-heavy spider webs I’ve ever seen. I feel so, so lucky and happy and grateful to have been in the right place at the right time to see this sight. It makes me want to come back tomorrow.

These are just the shots I took with my cell phone. Wait until you see the shots I got with my real cameras!

I was actually a bit under 198! Not bad. Not bad at all.

Day One Hundred Fifty-Six

September 22, 2010

I got up at 5:30 for my regular morning walk, doing my now-standard 300 reps of grip exercises on each digit. I think that my allergies were acting up: I was breathing heavily after climbing the stairs at the end of my walk, and I was inexplicably tired despite the reasonable amount of sleep I’d gotten. Again I listened to my body and took a nap. Given all the exercise I’m getting, I want to err on the side of not making myself sick.

Between late morning and about 5:00, I dealt with the Escort as detailed in previous posts. I was anxiety-ridden enough at the end of it all to require one of the Christopher Eccleston episodes of Doctor Who that I’d gotten out of the library before I could even think about a workout. But gosh darn it, I got my inspection sticker!

I did a fantastic calisthenics routine and caught up on my blogging while watching more Doctor Who with Grace. Gosh I love Eccleston. It’s such a shame that he only did one season.

Again, I got lots of exercise and stuck strictly to my diet today, eating plenty of fruits and vegetables. The only indulgence I allowed myself was a biscotti and tea while watching Doctor Who.

Great workout

September 22, 2010

I had a lot of anxiety surrounding the car, and it all came to a head this afternoon. So when I started my calisthenics routine at about 6:00, I didn’t feel like I had enough energy to match what I did last week. But I hung in there and proved myself wrong. Not only did I finish, but my numbers matched or beat any previous workout. Yeah!
