I got out for another strenuous, nine-mile hike in Ward Pound Ridge Reservation today. I know it was a nine-mile hike because today, unlike yesterday, I remembered to put fresh batteries in my GPS! To see a map of my route with a slideshow, see EveryTrail. Click the links above if you just want to see more pictures.

Day One Hundred Eighty-Five

October 21, 2010

I got out on a strenuous hike in Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, and I did a strenuous workout in the evening. I followed my diet rigorously: all I ate were two egg sandwiches, two Zone Bars, a biscotti, half a butternut squash with garam masala and ginger and no butter, and a lot of tea.

I feel like I’m just about back in the groove. Woo hoo!

Back to the new exercise routine

October 21, 2010

Ack. My arms and shoulders got weaker during the last three weeks. Not too bad a workout, though. Give me two weeks and I’ll be surpassing the workouts of three weeks ago.

Not bad. Again, the drop from yesterday is a bit exaggerated because I weighed myself upon my return from a long hike. I’m going to have to be very careful if I want tomorrow’s weigh-in to even match this one.

After stumbling a bit yesterday with my dieting, I was determined to get in a serious hike today. So I drove to Ward Pound Ridge for another strenuous hike. My feet are still a bit sore from all the hiking I’ve been doing lately, but darned if that pack doesn’t feel lighter than it did a few months ago. Yay for fall, and yay for getting in shape!

Day One Hundred Eighty-Four

October 20, 2010

I’ve been having a hard time getting up in the mornings, which as of Monday led me to think that I was a bit depressed. That’s why I got myself out on a hike around the Colonial Greenway on Monday, and why I resumed my calisthenics today. For me, nothing cuts through the Gordian knot of the blues like getting my ass moving. It’s one case where the problem may be fixed by treating the symptoms.

I did a great job on my diet during most of the day: I ate an egg sandwich, two Zone Bars, and plenty of fiber in the form of oranges, an apple, half of a butternut squash, and some broccoli.

Then I went to hang out with my little brother, and my traditions became a bit stronger than my rules. See, getting an Italian Burger from Roberto’s has been a tradition since the day almost two years ago when I first became Khalil’s Big Brother. An Italian Burger is two hamburger patties in an Italian roll with fries right on it. We get one of those, along with a bottle of soda, and split it. I could do worse, e.g. by eating a whole Italian Burger rather than half, but I could do a lot better.

Then we made the apple pie. With the butter crust. Yum. I’m rather proud of myself for limiting myself to one medium-sized piece. I’m not so proud that my munchies persisted so strongly through the evening that, when I got home, I indulged in some chips and salsa.

Hold on…

There. I just threw the rest of that bag of chips down the garbage chute. Resisting temptation is easier if one has to go to the store to give in to it.

Anyway. Not a great day, not a horrible day… just a day on the front lines.

Back at the calisthenics

October 20, 2010

Well, I finally got back into my calisthenics routine today. I didn’t do too badly, considering that I hadn’t done them in about three weeks.

Apple pie with Khalil

Khalil and I made an apple pie tonight… an apple pie with a butter crust, I might add. When the suckmeter got close to this pie, the needle got buried at -11.

I limited myself to a smallish or medium-sized slice, depending on what you consider to be a smallish slice of pie. Sure, I could have stuck strictly to my diet and had none, but I’m not so obsessed that I’m going to miss the opportunity to enjoy, with my Little Brother, a little slice of the pie we’d just made.

Acorn squash with butter, garam masala and ginger

Acorn squash with butter, garam masala and ginger

Here’s a shot of my lunch: half of an acorn squash with a little bit of butter and a generous sprinkling of garam masala and ginger, baked in the oven for an hour or two. Mmmmmmm. It’s yummy enough that next time I’m going to forgo the butter.
